Joe Trevino is the founder and lead instructor of T3 Response Group. Throughout his 21 years in law enforcement, Joe has served his agency in a myriad of capacities. He has been active in Patrol / Field Training / SWAT Operations / School Resource Officer / Lead Hostage Negotiator / Financial Crimes Investigator / Lead Major Crimes Detective / Intermediate Weapons Instructor / Lead Defensive Tactics Instructor. Joe has also been an adjunct instructor at two regional police academies that serve over 16 counties in the greater North Texas area.
From the outset of his career, Joe recognized that defensive tactics training was lacking in areas, and believed there were even more gaps in the training of new recruits going through the academy. There are many aspects and methods associated with defensive tactic systems, from the philosophy of defense, to the recognition of cues and/or indicators that often occur before an attack takes place, to hand-to-hand and some type of takedown, and another was ground fighting only, just to name a few. Knowing each of these systems individually was not going to help an officer when out in the field. There needed to be a “connector”, something that brought all of the various tactics together, but there was not anything like that. Upon this realization, Joe decided to help fill in those gaps by taking as many instructor courses he could, as he knew that in being able to connect all of these systems, it would make a better trained, a more prepared, a more complete officer. Since then, Joe has developed a training method that encompasses quick thought combined with purposeful action, proper technique, and increased effective communication between the officers and any subject(s) they are handling, thus resulting in a lower risk of unnecessary injury to anyone involved. Being an avid martial artist since the age of 8 years old, Joe recognized that his extensive training in martial arts combined with his training and experience as a law enforcement officer, he would be able to train officers and help take their skill set to the next level. Joe is so incredibly passionate about training because he believes it is the only way to empower officers so that they perform their job confidently, legally, and most importantly, safely.
Our primary focus at T3 Response is safety; the safety of the officers and the safety of public.
Throughout my tenure of my 21 years as a police officer, I have felt there are gaps in the training of officers. I sought out experts in the field and have gathered information and experience from them that is used in the creation of this system.
In a world that is ever changing and evolving, we could not ignore that the current course curriculums were not preparing officers for high stress situations they will encounter on the street.
Any sort of gap in defensive tactic and technique training leaves officers vulnerable. Nor does the current curriculum cover an extremely important tool for officers to have out in the field. The knowledge and ability to effectively communicate and deescalate a situation. This is perhaps one of the most important tools for an officer to possess. After all, de-escalation is an outcome, and it is an outcome that benefits every officer, as well as the public.
The training of today’s officers is a complex patchwork with a multitude of facets. It is not enough for officers just to be able to cite agency processes, legal code / laws, and rules and regulations. In addition to knowing the aforementioned, they also have to be proficient in defense tactics and techniques. A style of training that will result in officers who will be able to default to a level of training that allows them to remain calm but overtly aware. The style of instruction that I have developed has proven to increase an officer’s survival and lower the risk of unnecessary injuries to the subjects when being restrained. Due to the officer being able to rely on a more complete level of training, the communication levels between the officers and subjects involved will automatically increase and that in itself allows the officer to maintain control of the situation. These aspects all dramatically lower the risk of injury and liability for all involved.
